On 28 August 2016, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, the crown prince of Dubai, announced the launch of the first Urban Mobility Innovation Index (UMii). The project, initiated and sponsored by the Roads & Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA), is being implemented by UITP in partnership with Future Cities Catapult.
The main objective of the project is to develop a playbook and recommendations that enables city stakeholders to improve innovation in the urban mobility arena across three dimensions:
- readiness of the innovation ecosystem,
- deployment of innovative solutions, and
- liveability, looking at the impact of such innovations
Instead of scoring and ranking cities, UMii will provide a composite of a collection of indicators that enables inter-city comparison and conversation to foster innovation in urban mobility services and systems. Cities worldwide will be invited to participate in UMii, city data will be collected and analysed which will contribute to the development of the UMii playbook.
Cities contributing data will also be invited to take part in the Urban Mobility Innovation Forum, dedicated to exchange and learn ‘next and best’ practices.
Initial findings from the project will be shared at the Global Public Transport Summit (15-17 May 2017) in Montreal.
