Third Thursday - Digital Street Infrastructure
City infrastructure is increasingly becoming digital as well as physical, opening up new opportunities for the public and private sector. Companies paint bold visions of how their technology will change our cities but what is the reality, will this technology just damage the streetscape creating street clutter or could it really change the face of our cities for the better. Join us to hear about how digital street furniture is changing cities now and how it could develop.
Digital Skills Workshop (Immersive)
Future Cities Catapult together with the Institute of Coding (Coventry University) are hosting a workshop for businesses in the Immersive sector on 11th December 2018. This is an expression of interest for all businesses who are currently providing services in the Immersive area, including solutions for AR/VR/MR, for any industry that falls within the Advanced Urban Services Sector (automotive/mobility, healthcare, built environment etc). The purpose of workshop is to understand the trends in the immersive area, what are the most highly sought after skills (programmers, UX designers, researchers etc), where the skills gaps are currently and what you need in order to scale up your businesses.
XR (Cross Reality/VR/AR) Partnership Day - Future Cities Catapult
Future Cities Catapult are pleased to be working in partnership to deliver a full day workshop exploring the possible value of Cross Reality, VR and AR to the advanced urban services/smart cities agenda. We invite a number of university and business partners to join us to help define what our research priorities might be in this area, to network and to engage with some of the latest tools and technologies. XR (Cross or Extended Reality) is a recent umbrella term that attempts to simplify the understanding and adoption of the full range of immersive technologies that generate new forms of reality, recognising that in the future we will see people interacting with the virtual world and real world in seamless, frictionless, and continuous ways, not bound by delineations of experience between VR, AR, and MR.
Third Thursday: Celebrating a successful sector
For our final Third Thursday of the year we will looking back over the last 12 months and celebrating the success of the UK’s growing advanced urban services sector and showcasing some of those businesses driving that growth.

Breakfast Briefing: Smart Cities and Inadvertent Exclusion: A Toolkit for Better and More Inclusive Smart Cities
As more and more smart technologies are incorporated into the fabric of our cities, it has become increasingly pressing to ensure that those technologies reach the audiences they are intended to reach. This presentation introduces the concept of ‘inadvertent exclusion’, where potential users or consumers of smart city technologies are found not to engage with the possibilities that those smart initiatives can offer. It is argued that this may be the result of a misunderstanding of the importance of social difference in the way that cities work. Based on two years of research in Milton Keynes, one of the UK’s leading smart cities, by researchers from The Open University and The University of Oxford, this presentation examines how this process of inadvertent exclusion works. Drawing on case studies and examples of good practice, the presentation also sets out a toolkit to avoid inadvertent exclusion and so create better and more inclusive smart cities.
