Research by ZCD Architects over the last few years has revealed the extent to which social use of external spaces can vary significantly between developments, depending on their layout. Most importantly, children’s independent play may be at the heart of the success stories. The practice’s most recent research, Neighbourhood Design: working with children towards a child friendly city, was carried out with children on an inner city estate in Hackney. It is already having an impact on the draft London plan, the new Housing Design Guidance for London and policies at a more local level.
Dinah will explain how new ways of mapping and engaging with children can potentially transform residential neighbourhood design, embedding social value from the outset. She will present key findings and the recommendations from ZCD’s research and explain how it has led her to work in a more dynamic and strategic way, looking at policy, urban strategy and practice with a range of authorities, clients and organisations.
