As urban populations grow and people live longer, there are increasing challenges to keep cities functioning.
Over the past few years, substantial technology development has been directed at improving the environment in which we live and how we interact with it, and many individual smart cities projects have been undertaken across the UK.
However, most have never been tested at scale, or in combination with other services in the same place, and there is yet to be a UK city that has fully integrated systems to deliver the potential benefits for its citizens and businesses.
At Future Cities Catapult, we are working on the Hyper Connected Data Rich City project to create the governance, financial and policy instruments required to deliver a programme of city scale commercial demonstrators in the UK.
This would allow new innovative products and services to be tested at scale, based on transformative digital technologies like next generation telecoms technology.
It will enable UK companies to prove the business cases for highly innovative new products and services. The project will create new outline governance and partnership structures that cities can use to support businesses to test and deploy, bridging the gap to commercialisation.
We’ve been working on this project for over a year, undertaking research and market engagement with city stakeholders to explore the need and requirement for scaling city solutions.
Our work in this space has been further endorsed and supported by Innovate UK enabling us to continue our efforts by developing and proposing alternative governance and business models.
This will help lay the foundation for accelerating the deployment at scales of transformative digital technologies including connected healthcare, advanced urban services, on demand logistics.
